The Recognition of Eminence Award was presented to Helen Joan Bailey Morley, BB. Helen was a professor of linguistics at the University of Michigan from 1959-2004, where was given the title of Professor Emerita. In 1994, the university honored her outstanding contributions to the university and the field of second language learning and teaching by establishing the endowed Morley Scholarships for studies in second language, and learning and teaching.

As an internationally recognized specialist in second language oral communication, theory and pedagogy, Joan has lectured and conducted seminars and worships in Puerto Rico, Brazil, Canada, England, Egypt, Germany, Japan and Mexico. She has also authored 17 books and more than 70 journal articles.
