The Recognition of Eminence Award was presented to Dr. S. June Smith, KK. Dr. June’s career began as a kindergarten teacher and elementary assistant. She taught child development courses and was involved in the training of teachers for early childhood education. She served as the assistant to the superintendent and director of special pupil services and as director of special education for Lancaster County Schools, PA.

In 1965, Dr. June established the Retarded Children’s Daycare Center in Lancaster, PA. It was renamed the S. June Smith Center in 1974.

Dr. June was past president of the American University Women, Lancaster Health and Welfare Board of Trustees, Hearing Center Association Board and Pennsylvania Association for the Education of the Gifted. When she retired, she served on the board of directors of Citrus County Rape and Abuse Center, worked with the United Way and volunteering for the Key Training School for the Retarded.
