My journey with Alpha Sigma Alpha, particularly with the Zeta Rho chapter, has been nothing short of extraordinary, marking a pivotal chapter in my life that began in the fall of 2020. My sisters became my support system, my confidants and, undoubtedly, my future bridesmaids. They were the silver lining during the ups and downs of college life, reminding me time and again of the strength and resilience of our bond.
To every new member who’s starting this journey, know that you have the power to make your sorority experience profoundly rewarding. Initially, you might feel overwhelmed with all the new information, traditions and expectations. Don’t forget that every member of Alpha Sigma Alpha was once in your shoes. Embrace this learning phase with enthusiasm and curiosity. Ask questions, participate in new member education sessions and take notes. This is your foundation-building phase.
Make it a priority to attend all sorority events and meetings, not just the mandatory ones. This shows your commitment and provides numerous opportunities to bond with your sisters, understand the sorority’s values, and immerse yourself in its culture. From philanthropic events to sisterhood retreats, each activity offers a unique way to connect and grow. Make a genuine effort to get to know each member. Beyond just learning names, strive to understand their interests, majors, and backgrounds. These are the women who will be your support system, mentors and possibly lifelong friends. Participate in mixers, sisterhood events, and informal gatherings to build these connections. Even as a new member, there are opportunities to get involved in leadership roles or committees. This could range from helping organize a philanthropic event to taking on a role in a chapter committee. These experiences not only enhance your skills but also deepen your connection to the sorority’s mission and values.
Joining a sorority is a journey of personal and collective growth. Be open to the lessons it brings, even when they challenge you. The experiences you have and the challenges you overcome will shape you into a stronger, more compassionate leader. Whenever you feel overwhelmed or uncertain, remember that you’re surrounded by sisters who have been in your place and are eager to help. Don’t hesitate to reach out for support, advice or just a listening ear.
My own new member experience was a mix of excitement, nervousness and a deep sense of belonging. Building connections came from actively participating, being genuine and keeping an open mind. Each event, meeting and casual hangout was an opportunity to learn more about my sisters and myself. I embraced the sorority’s values and sought ways to contribute, which deeply enriched my experience.
