Scholarships

The Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation believes that learning should last a lifetime and our commitment to that belief is carried out through scholarships available to students pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees. Thousands of dollars in scholarships are provided annually. Individuals working towards their undergraduate or graduate degree, you are eligible to apply for a scholarship from the Foundation. One individual will be selected for each scholarship, unless otherwise noted below. Financial need is not considered when determining merit unless specified.

Scholarship Information

Scholarship applications for the 2024-25 academic year will open December 1, 2024, and close March 1, 2025. All scholarship applications are evaluated using an anonymizing method that removes applicant names, pictures, institutions and chapter designations to reduce implicit bias.

All portions of scholarship applications must be completed in the application system. No paper or email attachments will be accepted outside of the system.

Excluding financial need information from the application will not count against the applicant on any merit-based scholarships, but the applicant will not be considered for scholarships that do include a financial need in recipient qualifications.

Members enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program that will take place in the next school year are eligible. Graduate students who do not yet have a graduate school GPA or transcript should use the most recent GPA and transcript available. Designated scholarships are also available to non-members.

Award recipients will be notified via mail or email by early June and scholarship award amounts will be mailed directly to recipient institutions during the summer.

NATIONAL SPECIAL EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship is awarded to a member and a non-member pursuing graduate or undergraduate degree in special education. It was first awarded in 1968. One scholarship is available.
MARTHA GREEN DIMOND SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship, designated for members pursuing a graduate degree in any field, was established in 1977 by Martha Dimond, AA. One scholarship is available.

DR. ROSALIE MESSINA SIMARI SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship, designated for members pursing a graduate degree in education, was established in 2002 by Kathleen Messina, ΓΔ, in honor of her sister, Rosalie Simari, ΓΔ. If a qualified applicant does not apply for this scholarship, it will be made available to a member pursuing an undergraduate degree in education. One scholarship is available.
LOIS V. BEERS SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship, designated for a member pursing either a graduate or undergraduate degree in business, was established in 2001 by Lois Beers, BΓ, in honor of her sister, Mary Beers, BΓ. One scholarship is available.

NATIONAL PHILANTHROPIC SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship, designated for a member pursing either a graduate or undergraduate degree in any field, was established in 1967. One scholarship is available.

AMY M. SWISHER SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship, designated for a member pursing either a graduate or undergraduate degree in any field, was established in 1952 in honor of Amy Swisher, professor emerita of art education at Miami University, OH. One scholarship is available.
WILMA WILSON SHARP SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship, designated for a member pursing an undergraduate degree in any field, was established in 1968 by the Greater Kansas City Alumnae Chapter and designated in 1970 in honor of President Emerita Wilma Wilson Sharp, ZZ. One scholarship is available.

FOUNDERS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS
These scholarships, designated for members pursuing an undergraduate degree in any field, were established to commemorate the Sorority’s centennial in the year 2001. These scholarships are awarded to outstanding collegians who exemplify the vision, academic pursuits and leadership skills of the Founders. Five scholarships are available.

MARY TURNER GALLAGHER SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship, designated for a member pursing an undergraduate degree in any field, was established in 1967 in honor of Mary Gallagher, XX, first initiate and advisor of Chi Chi Chapter, Ball State University, IN. One scholarship is available.

NANCY MARTIN WILLIAMS SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship, designated for a member pursing an undergraduate degree in business or education, was established in 2010 by Nancy A. Williams, XX. Academic performance, financial need and participation in extracurricular activities will be evaluated. One scholarship is available.

BETA ZETA SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship, designated for a member pursing an undergraduate degree in any field, was established by alumnae and friends of Beta Zeta Chapter, University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Demonstration of high academic performance and lifetime commitment to Alpha Sigma Alpha will be evaluated. One scholarship is available.

DR. GERALDINE COX LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established by Dr. Geraldine Vang Cox, NN. It is designated for a collegiate member of chapter in Region 9, 10 or 11 who is pursuing an undergraduate degree in any field. Applicants must demonstrate academic excellence, leadership, volunteerism and meaningful participation in Alpha Sigma Alpha and/or other activities. Preference is given to applicants with exceptional experience and at least a 3.3 GPA on a 4 point scale. One scholarship is available.
BETA EPSILON SCHOLARSHIP
Designated for a member of Beta Epsilon Chapter, James Madison University, VA, pursing an undergraduate degree in any field and was established by Beta Epsilon Chapter. The recipient must demonstrate the ideals of Alpha Sigma Alpha and have academic financial need.

BETA SIGMA SCHOLARSHIP
Designated for the treasurer and president of Beta Sigma Chapter, Missouri State University. These were established in April 1987 in honor of three Beta Sigma Alumnae who served as chapter treasurer and national treasurer: Rose Marie Fellin, 1964-67; Juanita Roberts Rowe, 1967-1970, 1974-75; and Marilyn Ramsey Garbee, 1975-80, 1982-84.

PATTI BALWANZ SCHOLARSHIP
Designated for a member of Beta Sigma Chapter, Missouri State University, pursing an undergraduate degree in any field. The scholarship was established in 2007 by family and friends of Patti Balwanz, who succumbed to breast cancer at the age of 29. This scholarship is awarded to Beta Sigma Chapter collegian who demonstrates academic excellence, leadership, volunteerism and meaningful participation in Alpha Sigma Alpha and other activities.

ZETA ZETA SCHOLARSHIP
Designated for a member of Zeta Zeta Chapter, University of Central Missouri, pursing an undergraduate degree in any field. The scholarship was established by alumnae and friends of Zeta Zeta Chapter and recipients must demonstrate high academic performance and lifetime commitment to Alpha Sigma Alpha.

DR. ANN ROWLETTE SCHOLARSHIP
Designated for an undergraduate member of the Phi Phi Chapter at Northwest Missouri State University pursuing a degree in any field with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4-point scale. This scholarship was established by alumnae of Phi Phi Chapter including Dr. Ann Rowlette. The recipient must demonstrate academic excellence, leadership, volunteerism and meaningful participation in Alpha Sigma Alpha.

ZETA ETA SCHOLARSHIP
Designated for a member of Zeta Eta Chapter, Rockhurst University, MO, pursing an undergraduate degree in any field and was established by Zeta Eta Chapter. Applicants must demonstrate high academic performance and lifetime commitment to Alpha Sigma Alpha.

THETA GAMMA UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP
Designated for a member of Theta Gamma Chapter, Christopher Newport University, VA, pursing an undergraduate degree in any field and was established by Theta Gamma Chapter. The recipient must demonstrate the ideals of Alpha Sigma Alpha and have academic financial need, plus have a minimum of 2.6 cumulative GPA.

MELISSA BRADY POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP
Designated for an alumna member of Theta Gamma Chapter, Christopher Newport University, VA, to provide postgraduate academic assistance for career development opportunities. The scholarship may be used for a broad range of educational postgraduate purposes including pursing a masters or doctorate, attending a professional seminar, taking licensure or certificate courses or other similar continuing educational goals.
