Parents and Caregivers

Welcome parents, caregivers and support systems of Alpha Sigma Alpha women. Whether your loved one has just accepted their bid of membership or is coming to the end of their collegiate career, thank you for being a supporter of their membership. Your Alpha Sigma Alpha member is among more than 88,000 collegiate and alumnae members who believe in our shared values, high ideals and the bonds of lifelong sisterhood.

What Members Can Expect

Academics

Learning and Responsibility are two core values of Alpha Sigma Alpha. Within those values, we support academic excellence for not only our individual members but collegiate chapters.

Each collegiate chapter creates its own scholarship plan to assist and encourage chapter members to achieve their best academically with systems in place to support their studies and to introduce them to their resources on their personal college campus.

Collegiate chapters must have an average of at least a 2.5 GPA for their membership to be in good standing with the national organization.

Alpha Sigma Alpha encourages it’s members to support our three national philanthropic partners as well as those in their local communities. Alpha Sigma Alpha women express their care and concern for others through the support of the Sorority’s philanthropic endeavors.

Alpha Sigma Alpha offers member education for new members, initiate members and seniors. New members focus on learning through our eight core values. Initiate members work on personal development through a core value program. Senior members focus on topics that will help the transition our of college and using their purpose to impact the their community.

Alpha Sigma Alpha values the involvement of parents, families and support systems of our members. However, our members’ right to privacy is of the utmost importance. Information about, but not limited to, membership status, discipline issues, finances and housing are provided solely to individual members. Members may choose not to share information with their parents or family members, and we respect their choice and privacy.

Supporting your Alpha Sigma Alpha

For more than 120 years, Alpha Sigma Alpha members have been elevating the influence of women in the world through the development of our women pursuing their dreams of higher education. The engagement of parents, caregivers, guardians, family members and support systems in your loved women’s experience is encouraged and warmly welcomed. Regardless of your level of involvement, it is critical to recognize the importance of your Alpha Sigma Alpha member having an independent membership experience. While your support makes a positive impact, your Alpha Sigma Alpha’s member experience is ultimately up to her.

Health & Safety

Alpha Sigma Alpha expects that all members will follow organizational bylaws, policies & procedures, college/university regulations and local, state and federal laws.

Hazing has no place in Alpha Sigma Alpha. The Sorority is committed to educating members on national policies regarding hazing and to promoting awareness to prevent hazing. The national organization will investigate any report of hazing.

Alpha Sigma Alpha prohibits behaviors that intend to be, or are reasonably foreseeable to be, undignified, threatening, intimidating or harassing to another person or group or within member activities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Alpha Sigma Alpha new members have all the same rights and privileges as initiated members. The moment they participate in their new member ceremony, they are able to wear “letters” (Alpha Sigma Alpha insignia or Greek letters AΣA) right away, attend chapter meetings, vote on chapter business, run for office and attend all chapter programming/events. The title “new member” simply refers that they are the newest members of the chapter and that they have a designated membership education program to introduce them to Alpha Sigma Alpha. Alpha Sigma Alpha does not have pledges and new members should never be referred to as such.
Time commitment depends greatly upon the degree to which your Alpha Sigma Alpha becomes involved in her chapter. A new member typically devotes anywhere from three to eight hours per week to attending chapter meetings, membership education programming, academic programming, philanthropic events, social functions, or sisterhood events.
Each chapter creates its own budget annually, based on programming, administrative, and general operational costs. The chapter budget is passed by the vote of its membership. It is important to note that your member is responsible for the timely payment and completion of financial responsibilities.
The Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation is proud to award more than $95,000 each year in merit- and need-based scholarships to Alpha Sigma Alpha women for undergraduate and graduate study.
Alpha Sigma Alpha membership is for a lifetime. Members continue their engagement with Alpha Sigma Alpha after graduation through membership in alumnae chapters/associations, attending national events, serving in volunteer, donating to the Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation, and staying connected via social media, and the Phoenix magazine.
